Scene of the men bathing in the Ganges River in Varanasi. Hindus believe that the the holy water can wash away your sins. Well, having been to the Ganges, I'm not sure if its overflowing with holiness, but I do know that it is filled with something: bacteria. And a whole lot of them. Water that is considered safe for bathing has 500 bacteria per 100 mL of water. In the ganges there are 1.5 million per 100 mL! Crazy stuff, man. Apparently 30 sewars continuously dump into the same stretch of water that 60,000 Indians bathe in every day. And although I took many health risks on this trip, I decided that if I wanted E. coli poisoning, I should just go to Walkerton.
