My mom and I went to visit my brother Fred in Rochester, New York. Hes in his first year of the Finance PhD program and working way too hard to come visit us often in Canada, so we decided to go see him. I really enjoy going to the States, except for the fact that people are disconcertingly nice and polite, in my opinion, exceptionally patriotic. In Canada, most of us don't really think too highly of our country, except to compare its superiority over our southern neighbours in terms of cleanliness, multiculturalism and health. But Americans are just so proud to be citizens of the great U. S. of A. It's quite something to watch a football game and see big scary looking 300 pound guys who have tears dripping down their face when they hear their national anthem playing. Our guys shuffle their feet and look bored until the song is over. Plus, in the States, there are so many houses that put up flags. My mom and I, both being cheap Jews who are always on the lookout to make some extra money, would bet on how many American flags we would see in a given block. That is not a game that we would be able to play in Canada because, at least in Toronto, almost no one has the Maple Leaf draped outside. Sure the States has problems, but they are still a great country with freedom, democracy (and guns) for all.
