I was on the Toronto Symphony Orchestra website checking out their upcoming concerts and I saw this baby. It's the Star Trek Symphony! And two actors are taking time out of their busy has-been schedules to host it. It's kind of awesome, in an "oh my gosh, I knew the TSO was desperate to reach out to new audiences, but this is going a bit too far" way. Does Star Trek really even have music? Of course I'm not going to go (there's a limit to even my nerdiness), unless Patrick Stewart makes an appearance, playing that flute-like instrument that he learned when an alien probe psychically linked itself to him so that he could learn about a long since extinct civilization. Oh wait, that wasn't really Patrick Stewart? It was just a character he was playing on TV? Bah, that's crazy talk.

Anyways, though it sounds so very tempting, I'm going to hold out for Star Trek the Ballet.

Heh. And in case you're wondering, the answer is yes, I do have too much time on my hands.

ohhhh man! so speaking of nerdy things, i had a really nerdy moment this morning. before i can tell you about it, i need to tell you about a night a few months ago when i was walking home with a sanskrit friend after a hindu colloquium. somehow, during our conversation, i got to recounting a parable about a scorpion and a fox. perhaps you know it - a scorpion and a fox encountered one another one another on the banks of a river. the scorpion asked the fox if he would give him a ride across the river on his back. the fox said "of course not! if i do that, you will sting me!" the scorpion said: "no silly, if i sting you, you will drown, taking me along with you!" the fox considered this, and decided that the scorpion had a good point. so the fox let the scorpion onto his back and started to swim across the river. in the middle of the river, the scorpion stung the fox. as the fox started to drown, he asked "why did you do that? now we will both die!" and the scorpion responded: "i don't know why i did it, i guess it was just my nature."
well, at the time i couldn't remember where i had heard this story. i assumed it was some chinese parable from buddhism class in the past - which is what i told my friend.
now, step ahead to this morning. there i was watching re-runs of st voyager, when chakotay starts telling janeway that there is a parable told amongst his people of a scorpion and a fox.... needless to say, when i realized the extent of my nerdiness in that instant, i thought of you.
Haha, well clearly you need to start hanging out with cooler people, Lyds. People who will understand these literary allusions. People more...like me!
