Okay, only Erin is going to understand the coolness of this picture. We were in the same Evolutionary Biology class last term and our prof showed us this fan-frigging-tastically corny movie showing Darwin's adventures on the Beagle and later how he came to write and publish "On the Origin of Species". Anyway, they tried to make it fun and entertaining for us cynical university students, so they had actors play Darwin and other characters like his wife, Huxely, Wallace and so on. Anyway, there was this GREAT scene in the movie where "Darwin" is walking in this garden, in Down House, with his first cousin, who was later to become his wife. He's going on and on about natural selection and evolution and yada yada yada, and then, because the movie producers decided that we'd only care about what happens if there's a romantic element involved, Darwin stops walking right in front of a gate, like this, and blocks his cousins way so that she can't pass. When she asks to get by, he says that she can, but not without paying the toll...a kiss. It was so corny but too much fun, so I knew that Erin would appreciate seeing a photo of a gate in Darwin's house, where that scene may have actually taken place. (I personally think that Darwin was a lot smoother than to resort to something like that, but whatev). By all accounts, Darwin had a very happy marriage, and it was cool to hear about that also. Because although I admire many other scientists for their brilliant minds, like Einstein and Watson, the way that they treated women was disguisting, so it was cool to hear that there was a great scientist who was also a great man.
